Brownsville man believed to be missing in gulf
A man may be missing in the surf off South Padre Island, a U.S. Coast Guard official said Friday morning.
Thomas Lopez, 26, of Brownsville disappeared while body surfing with a friend with town limits Thursday evening, City Manager Dewey Cashwell said.
Lopez’s family told emergency officials the man had a history of epileptic seizures and is approximately 5’ 8” tall, Cashwell said.
“[South Padre Island] police are patrolling [the beach] now and have been at it all night,” Cashwell said.
Emergency officials were notified that Lopez disappeared while in the water at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday. The U.S. Coast Guard began search-and-rescue operations, but had yet to find the Brownsville man as of Friday morning.
The search began with helicopters and boats Thursday evening but was called off after approximately six hours, Petty Officer Ivan Bell said. The search reconvened at 6 a.m. Friday, he added.
According to Cameron County Parks Police, every park ranger on duty Friday morning continued in the search by patrolling county beaches.
